Potential Correlation Between IceCube Neutrinos and Late Bumps in Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gang Guo

IceCube has observed many TeV-PeV neutrino events, but their astrophysical origins remain largely unknown. Motivated by the observed late-time x-ray/optical bumps in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we examine the correlation between IceCube high-energy neutrino events with GRBs allowing a time-delay of ~ days and find a few potentially correlated events. We show in a model-independent way that sites capable of producing delayed ~ PeV neutrino events should be nonrelativistic or mildly relativistic. Their contribution to the diffuse neutrino flux is also estimated and can possibly account for a few events. Future observations from both IceCube and GRB afterglows can further test such connection.
